Summer is here in Vero Beach, and we all know what that means – Hurricanes.
One of the worst things that can happen to your home during a hurricane is roof damage. High speed winds can do significant damage to your roof and cause leaks, structural damage, and a multitude of other problems.
However, if you follow these 5 tips, you can lower your risk of roof damage during a storm.
GET A ROOF INSPECTION – The most important thing you can do is have a licensed roofing contractor inspect your roof for current issues. While these issues may not be causing a problem now, high speed winds and large amounts of rain can amplify current issues and cause significant problems post storm. When it comes to hurricane preparedness, it’s better to be pro-active than reactive.
TRIM YOUR TREES – Tree branches can cause serious damage during a storm, especially branches that hang over your roof. One of the best ways to prevent roof damage during a hurricane is to make sure all the branches that are over your roof are trimmed and disposed of properly prior to the storm coming. Make sure all limbs are out of your yard after trimming.
CLEAN YOUR GUTTERS – When a hurricane comes, it brings with it significant amounts of rain. If you gutters have pine needles, palm fronds, or clutter of any kind blocking the down spout, water can build up and back up into your home. Make sure your gutters are clean and clear of any debris prior to the arrival of a hurricane.
CHECK THE VENTILATION INTO YOUR ATTIC – You most likely have ventilation fans on your roof to help relieve some of the heat in your attic. Over time, these fans and ventilation devices can loosen or corrode allowing water to seep in, or possibly allowing the fans to fly off completely. This can cause significant damage to your roof with the amount of water a hurricane brings with it. Ensure these fans and vents are properly installed and in good standing to prevent damage at those sites.
CHECK YOUR INSURANCE POLICY – One of the most overlooked things when preparing for a storm is how your home is insured. Is there a warranty on your roof? Are you underinsured? These are questions to ask when reviewing your policy.
